A Piece of the Past

The sun sets early on Railey tonight

Together hearts beg the ocean to fight for freedom against the tiresome sun
Who slowly creeps into her blanket of water,
Disappearing after another hard day’s work

Scared of what the dark may bring
I cling to you, as you do to me
Touching lightly, yet holding steadily

Salt resides on your lips, leaving me thirsting for more of your soul
Filling my lungs with fresh perspective
My heart with new compassion
My eyes with strong ambition

I’m left taking pieces of you with me on my venture outwards
Knowing you will continue to shape me inwards

Another minute closer to saying goodbye
Affirmation that time is drawing near
And reality—approaching steadily

You are becoming thousands of miles away
As am I

We hold tighter,
Knowing full well that tomorrow brings a new beginning
to a future that we have yet to accept

Each disappearing ray angering me with the ability it has to slowly take you away
Finding comfort only in knowing that you will dance, like rays, within my heart

Yes the sun sets too early on Railey tonight

Yes, the sun still sets to early.
